It’s ridiculous, the number of trailers that have crossed our wires over the past 24 hours. We’ve teased everything from A Good Day to Die Hard and The Croods to The Lone Ranger and The Guilt Trip. Trailers are so vital right now that even Iron Man 3 tried to make news by announcing the date it’s probably going to release its trailer. The fun continues with a new our first look at Broken City, a modern crime noir from director Allen Hughes:

Great cast. As you can see, Hughes taps Russell Crowe to play a suspicious politician who hires a seasoned cop (Mark Wahlberg) to investigate his cheating wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones). As the detective probes, though, he blows the lid off of a much bigger issue eating away at the corrupt city from within.

The trailer for Broken City has an energy and an attitude that I desperately hope Hughes (From Hell, The Book of Eli) is able to infuse into the entire production. The clip’s so good, I’m willing to overlook the fact that Wahlberg’s playing a cop for the umpteenth time in his career. Seriously, I know Wahlberg plays other characters, but he plays cops way too often.

Still, as the trailer points out, City has Oscar power with Wahlberg, Crowe and Zeta-Jones in the cast. Just watching the three of them dig into Brian Tucker’s screenplay should be entertaining. The fact that it’s opening in January gives me pause. Last January, Wahlberg unleashed Contraband. Hopefully this is better. Broken City will be out on Jan. 18. What do you think of the trailer?
