Need more incentive to see Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain in theaters this weekend? Are you still wondering if Bay’s departure from Transformers into the realm of dark comedies is meant for you? The above red-band clip, shared via ScreenCrush, will give you a decent snapshot at the type of unapologetic humor Bay adores … and how Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plug in to his comedy. Brace for it.
Here’s what we can tell you about the scene, and where it fits into Bay’s narrative. It’s later in the story, after Wahlberg’s gym rat character, Daniel Lugo, has assumed the wealthy “identity” of a ruthless business owner (Tony Shaloub) … whom Wahlberg, Johnson and Anthony Mackie have kidnapped and extorted. Through shady tactics, they have acquired the man’s fortune, and they’re now blowing through it as only a pair of low-lifes can. Needless to say, they are bad influences on the neighborhood kids.
Eric Eisenberg bought into the Bay-hem of Pain & Gain, giving the director’s latest endeavor 3 stars out of 5. But the movie is a mixed bag with critics in general, earning only 47% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s not quite as good as Bay’s first Transformers film, which peaked at 57% back in 2007.
I still think that Pain & Gain is going to do quite well at the box office over the weekend. The Rock is about as big of a movie star as there is right now, and people likely want to see what Bay has cooked up. But do you like the red-band clip above?
