Do you know how many shopping days you have left until Christmas? You probably don’t want to know. So many of you are probably still busy decking the halls and trimming your trees (and the idea of facing a crowded shopping mall is daunting right about now). But there’s one movie scene that manages to instantly put me in the holiday mood, and I talk about amazing Christmas scenes in this week’s Monday Movie Memo:
There’s something positively magical about the song and sequence "What’s This?" in Henry Selick’s macabre The Nightmare Before Christmas. The song is delightful on its own. But the way that the scene is lit – so warm, with such a glow that’s in contrast to the Halloween Town sequences – that instantly make me feel like we have a window into The North Pole. Jack’s amazement at the sensation of Christmas in conveyed in this wonderful song-and-dance routine, and it puts me in the Christmas spirit every time I revisit it (which has become my favorite holiday tradition). Watch it now!
Over the years, the powerful scene has inspired many creative people to try and capture its brilliance. Everything from a Fall Out Boy cover…
… to a "What’s This?" parody track, which is COMPLETELY NSFW (due to language).
Very little competes with the original, and it’s Christmas staple for me. What’s yours? Which movie, scene or song instantly puts you in the holiday spirit? Share your choices below, and continue to have an amazing Christmas season!
