Shrek 4 Director Goes For Monster Squad

Monster Squad, as much as I might like it to be, is not in fact a sequel to Monsters vs. Aliens, one of my most unexpectedly beloved movies of 2009. Instead it's an entirely different live-action project over at Warner Bros., in which an adult finally has to face the monsters that tormented him in childhood.

Or at least, that's what it was in 2007, when McG was attached to direct it. Now it might going in an entirely different direction with Mike Mitchell, the Sherk Forever After director who has been picked up to direct this version. Variety writes that they want to put it into production as early as next summer, meaning that, given the slow pace of animation, we might see this movie even before that Monsters vs. Aliens sequel.

Even though no one has actually see Shrek Forever After, Mitchell has already been picked to direct MGM's live-action fantasy Once Upon A Time, about what happens with Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty's respective Prince Charmings go missing. His one big credit that makes him well-suited for all this is Sky High, a movie that everyone I know tells me I must watch, but then again, he also made Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. It's really hard to know what we'll be getting in all these, but given how rote animated movies can feel sometime, maybe it's better that way.
