Ever since director Josh Trank exited his upcoming Star Wars Anthology film early last month, fans of the legendary franchise have been wondering who the Walt Disney Company and the folks at LucasFilm would recruit to take his place. There still hasn't been any official word on the matter, but if new rumors are to be believed, then two strong candidates for the gig may be none other than Iron Man's Jon Favreau and Kick-Ass/X-Men: First Class ' Matthew Vaughn.

This story comes to us courtesy of the folks over at Schmoes Knows, who claim that the two filmmakers are being considered as the replacements for Josh Trank on what is expected to be the second Star Wars Anthology movie (following Gareth Edwards' Rogue One, which will be out next year). The report doubles down on previously rumored plot details that say that the movie will take a bit of inspiration from westerns and bounty hunter stories by centering on the adventures of both the notorious Boba Fett and Han Solo.

Those who have been following the rejuvenated Star Wars franchise closely over the last couple of years will note that this is not the first time that Jon Favreau's name has been mentioned in connection with the sci-fi saga series. Back in 2012 - before J.J. Abrams had been hired to make what would wind up being Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Favreau wasn't shy about his enthusiasm for the franchise and the idea of throwing his hat into the ring for the gig.

Funny enough, however, Matthew Vaughn was also in that race as well (though it's not too surprising when you consider that he and Favreau are genre filmmakers with successful backgrounds). Not only were there reports that suggested the British director would sign on to Star Wars Episode VII, but there was even a rumor at the time that said the film is what pulled him away from doing X-Men: Days of Future Past. Obviously that story turned out to be false, but that doesn't mean the guy wouldn't potentially be interested in joining the Star Wars franchise now.

Both Jon Favreau and Matthew Vaughn have earned big fan followings thanks to their work on some big titles in the last few years, but do you think they have the right stuff to make a Star Wars Anthology movie - possibly about the past adventures of Boba Fett and Han Solo? Hit the comments with your thoughts on the matter - as well as other avenues you'd like to see the studios go filmmaker-wise. Also, be sure to stay tuned in the coming weeks and months, as Disney and LucasFilm are surely working hard right now to find an official replacement for Josh Trank.
