Writer/director Joe Swanberg expects to have two features in theaters this year… though with someone as prolific as Swanberg, you never know. He could squeeze a third movie out before year’s end. His Happy Christmas is screening at Sundance as we speak. And his erotic thriller 24 Exposures will be in select theaters and on VOD on Jan. 24. IFC Midnight shared an exclusive clip from the film with us. Watch it below:
For the record, if a guy tells a girl at a bar that he takes "personal fetish photos," the very next shot better be of her asking the bartender for the check, because NOTHING good is going to follow. But from what we are hearing, this thriller might get a little bizarre, in a good way. Read the official synopsis:
Fetish photographer Billy (Adam Wingard) stages elaborate shoots around his fixations, photographing women in various stages of undress and death. When one of Billy's models winds up actually dead, depressed and romantically disillusioned investigator Michael (Simon Barrett), suffering through a crumbling relationship himself, knocks on his door and discovers a world he struggles to understand - in Billy's art, as well as his apparent ease at juggling professional and intimate relationships with a committed girlfriend and various models. Jealousy runs high, and meanwhile, a killer is still on the loose.
At the very least, it sounds like something completely different from anything else Swanberg has tried. That, alone, has us intrigued.
Swanberg is in the middle of a moment, if you want to call it that. He’s coming off of the fantastic relationship dramedy Drinking Buddies, with Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson and Anna Kendrick. And while the movie only earned $343,341 (according to BoxOfficeMojo), positive film-festival reviews and the presence of that cast seemed to put Swanberg on people’s radars. He also acted alongside Barrett in Wingard’s You’re Next, which has earned a cult following thanks to its late-summer run.
Swanberg’s audience base is growing. Will he continue to attract curious followers with 24 Exposures? It’s possible. The graphic NSFW trailer that dropped recently sets the stage, for sure. We’ll share it below. Keep an eye open for Exposures, and let us know what you think after you’ve seen it.
