Despite the fact that Black Friday is hitting stores in just a few short days (and seems to have hit the internet already), this week is actually pretty light on high-end releases, as well as gift sets. Regardless, even on the light weeks for Blu-ray and DVD releases, there is plenty to choose from and we've highlighted the bigger releases. You can check out The Expendables 3 and more, below.
The Expendables 3 Blu-rayThe gang is back for Expendables 3, but this time writers Sylvestor Stallone Creighton Rothenberger, and Katrin Benedikt mess with the formula. The new movie is a PG-13 adventure filled with less appearances from action’s old faithfuls and more appearances from some young hotshots. It’s a good launch pad for the youngsters, but it doesn’t have the grit of the first two movies in the franchise.
That isn’t to say the original members of the Expendables are totally absent. Stallone’s Barney Ross and Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas still lead the team this time around, and Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Terry Crews are all around in The Expendables 3. The latter gets injured early on and Barney Ross dismantles the older team, hiring on Mars (Victor Ortiz), Smilee (Kellan Lutz), Luna (Ronda Rousey), and Thorn (Glen Powell) to track down a villain known as Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson). There are tons of of other famous appearances, including the likes of Antonia Banderas and Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well.
The plot itself is silly but serviceable but we’re missing the bust-em-up action sequences and foul-mouthed comments of the original two movies (I specifically miss lines like: "You gonna fuck me in some weird cockamamie scheme of yours"). Kudos to director Patrick Hughes for trying something different with The Expendables 3, but unfortunately, the changes help to dampen rather than freshen the franchise.
You can order The Expendables 3 over at Amazon.
Best Special Feature: "The Expendables 3 Documentary" is definitely the longest extra on the disc. The stacked cast all shows up to talk about the movie, and at one point everyone talks about how different it was to create a script that included all of those characters and gave each of them enough of a worthwhile plot to want to show up in the third installation of the franchise. Seriously, if you are a fan, this documentary has everything. There’s behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, along with plenty of interviews and footage from The Expendables 3 press tour. It’s a lot, but much of it is interesting.
"New Blood: Stacked and Jacked"
"The Total Action Package"
