American Sniper held a solid lock on the number one spot for a third weekend in a row. There were three newcomers, but those three combined barely earned half of its three week old $31 million.

What makes Sniper's success interesting is that, despite opening wide in January, its original release date was December 25 of last year, making it a 2014 release. With almost $250 million and counting in domestic sales, its currently poised to fire past The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, The LEGO Movie and Captain America: The Winter Soldier to become the third highest grossing movie of that year (behind Guardians of the Galaxy and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I).

Obscure sci-fi entry The Almanac pushed its way to third place with, $8.5 million debut narrowly missing out on second place which went to Paddington. In the big scheme of things it's not an impressive launch, but with a minimalist $12 million production budget it isn't in danger of crashing and burning.

Kevin Costner's latest drama Black or White trickled in at fourth place with $6 million, the lowest wide opening for Costner since Swing Vote. Thriller The Loft barely hit the top ten, bringing in just $2 million.
