Subscribe To Weekend Box Office - Theaters Focked for the Holidays Updates
The holidays weren't quite so happy at the box office this weekend as year-to-date sales continued to slip. At this rate, total sales will just be enough to match sales last year. That's a tough hit for an industry used to 4-5% increases in sales each year.

It didn't help that Christmas fell on a Saturday this year, making it one holiday weekend that had audiences staying home instead of heading out to theaters. Compared to most end of the year weekends this year saw a typical turnout, but it may have been seen as a rough blow compared to last year which enjoyed a boost from Avatar-mania.

Top sales for the weekend went to Little Fockers which drew in $34 million for a tidy first place opening. Roll in what it earned from Wednesday's early release and it almost topped $50 million, hitting the half-way mark to recovering its $100 million price tag.

True Grit debuted to a solid opening at $25 million. With its overall totals since Wednesday the western is just a million shy of recovering its modest $38 million budget. That's a nice Christmas gift for Paramount who is also celebrating some Oscar buzz for this latest Cohen brother's offering.

The poorly marketed, ill-conceived Jack Black vehicle Gulliver's Travels made a miniature splash with a weak 7th place opening. At $7 million there's very little hope the movie will see many more people in theaters, much less a profit.

Hopes that holiday audiences would keep up the energy for Tron: Legacy fell through as the movie dropped 50% to $20 million this weekend. To date it's still $70 million shy of recovering its $170 million budget.

Here's hoping your holidays have been brighter than Hollywood's! For the full festive top ten details, check out the chart below.
