This has been a great weekend for Deadpool fans. On Friday, 20th Century Fox released the first image of Ryan Reynolds in full costume, and it blew our minds how much it looks ripped straight out of the comics. But what exactly can we expect the movie to be about? A new official release date has been posted online that tells us exactly that.
The movie's official website, which has the perfect URL DeadpoolsWebsite.com, includes not only a high-res image of the Merc With The Mouth, but also an actual, studio-released description of what the movie is about. You can read the description below:
Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Some will note that this plot description - and the full-on look of the character - completely clashes with the portrayal of the character seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but X-Men: Days of Future Past holds all of the answers to explain that. Following the events of that movie, every event in the franchise timeline post-1973 was erased from continuity, and that includes the plot of what's arguably the worst film in the series.
If Deadpool stays closer to the comics than X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the film won't find Wade Wilson transformed into the Merc With The Mouth in the hands of the Weapon X program that created Wolverine, but instead at a government run facility known as the Hospice (which he goes to in the hopes of curing his cancer). It is here that he undergoes horrific treatment at the hands of a monster named Dr. Killebrew and his sadistic assistant Ajax (a.k.a. Francis). Going by the books, I'd assume that "the man who nearly destroyed his life" is Ajax instead of Dr. Killebrew, as the former actually winds up regretting his life choices.
In addition to Ryan Reynolds as the titular character, Deadpool also stars T.J. Miller as Weasel, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa a.k.a. Copycat, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, and Ed Skrein in a mystery role. Filmmaker Tim Miller is making his directorial debut, and will be working from a script written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Production has already begun on the film - after about five years of being stuck in the basement of development hell - and 20th Century Fox will finally be delivering it to theaters on February 12, 2016. If it winds up being as good as the test footage from last year and the first look image, we should be in for a real treat.
