We’ve known for some time that DC’s upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice involves much more than just the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel throwing down. It’s also going to introduce other members of their impending movie universe. A key one of these is Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, and though we don’t know anything substantial about her role, the director assures us that it is going to be a vital one, especially moving forward towards the Justice League movies.
Talking to EW, director Zack Snyder, who also helmed Man of Steel in 2013, revealed that Wonder Woman is indeed going to be a lynchpin role. He said:
In all fairness, this quote doesn’t actually reveal how much Gadot and Wonder Woman will appear on screen in Dawn of Justice. However, considering that, like their chief rival Marvel, the earlier movies in the DCCU will culminate and come together with the Justice League movies, it’ll be super interesting to see how she serves as the "gateway drug" in this movie.
Yesterday we got our first look at Gadot as Diana Prince, not in her Wonder Woman get up, and in the context of the film. The photo showed her along with Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne, and while it’s unclear exactly what the situation is in the scene, the two are all gussied up and appear to be at some kind of fancy soiree that looks like it may be a museum gala or something of that ilk. Whatever the scenario, it’s clear that Batman and Wonder Woman’s civilian alter egos have some kind of interaction, perhaps even romantic, or at least flirtatious.
For her part, Gadot is nervous but excited about the role. Initially, she didn’t know what part she was auditioning for, as she read a scene from Pulp Fiction. When Snyder revealed the true nature of the part, however, the 30-year-old Israeli actress and model’s jaw hit the floor. She said:
When the Wonder Woman solo movie hits your local metroplex in the summer of 2017, it will be the first of the more than 20 major superhero motion pictures that have opened since Iron Man back in 2008 to be headlined by a woman. Not only that, but Wonder Woman is one of DC’s most popular long-running characters, one who we haven’t seen on screen in a number of years, so there is going to be a lot of interest in this.
Until then, however, we’ll see exactly what Wonder Woman brings to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice when the film opens March 25, 2016.
