In the last few years, Wednesday has become one of my favorite ongoing shows to watch with my Netflix subscription. And, given the show’s ongoing success, I haven’t really contemplated the end of the series happening anytime soon. However, Jenna Ortega just made some fresh comments that have me thinking morbidly about the series.
Wednesday Season 3 is currently filming and expected to arrive sometime next year. The upcoming season will have Ortega’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-star Winona Ryder joining Nevermore in an unknown role and Eva Green set to play Morticia’s sister Ophelia. Here are Ortega’s latest comments on the new season:
I’ve been in this experimental phase... It’s only been in the last year or so—especially with the show coming to a head and getting ready to enter this next chapter in my life and career—that I’ve really honed in. I’ve seen some things now. I’ve tried some things. Now it’s important to me to be focused on stories and characters that I feel truly connected to.
Whoa, I totally didn’t realize that the teenaged cast of Wednesday are already inching toward graduation. For shows like this, that typically means there’s only so much more life left into it. That is, unless Wednesday ends up continuing past Wednesday Addams’ high school days at Nevermore Academy.
I like this tease too, but between those comments and these next ones, I’m getting stressed out about the future of the series. As she also said in the Esquire interview when speaking to where she’s at in her career right now:
This season, especially because the kids are seniors in high school now, we’re dealing with more confrontational feelings regarding family and what it means to be an adult and what you see for your life. It’s not really until you get to the precipice of adulthood that you start to realize, Oh, God, well, maybe I’ve got to have a plan.
What? Wednesday is “coming to a head”? She’s getting “ready to enter this next chapter?” What the heck is she talking about? In my mind the Netflix show is still in its early days, but Jenna Ortega’s comments seem to say otherwise. It sounds more like she’s getting ready to move on from The Addams Family spinoff, but perhaps I’m misreading her comments.
I guess it’s possible that she just means with Wednesday focusing on senior year a lot of things are changing. But, the whole premise of the show kind of revolves around Wednesday going to this school. I’m starting to think I should start thinking about the new season differently than I have. Though, I will of course wait to panic until the fire alarm officially goes off.
As far as her “experimental” phase, Ortega is referring to her upcoming run of movies on the way. First, she’ll be in Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun where she plays a companion android who seems like the complete opposite of Wednesday Addams. And then, she has a movie on the 2027 release schedule called The Great Beyond. In it, she shared that she’s playing a character whom she describes as a “freak in a different way” than her other roles have been.
I don’t blame Jenna Ortega for wanting to branch out from her beloved spooky character. However, at the same time, in the span of four years we’ve only seen 16 episodes of the show. I’m most certainly not ready to watch Thing wave his hand goodbye. Someone say it isn’t so!
