First, there were the casting decisions. Then, Woody Allen’s latest film received a name change, from The Bop Decameron to Nero Fiddled. Then it changed again. Now we’re getting official images and behind-the-scenes shots of To Rome With Love, courtesy of the international site ComingSoon.it. You can see five of them below, and the other half over there.
You can see virtually everyone from Allen’s cast, including the director himself both in front of and behind the lens. The film stars Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page. Like most of Allen’s latest features, it showcases a new European city as the backdrop for an ensemble dra-medy. The movie is currently in post-production and will arrive in theaters on June 22.
The images confirm a slight fear. There’s an awful lot of Benigni on display here. And look at that “hammy” photo of him running away from photographers. Does he play a celebrity? A famous politician? Does he have ample room to vamp for the camera? Because we know the energetic Italian can chew the scenery.
I’m hoping, instead, that To Rome With Love has more of Eisenberg and Baldwin doing their best uptight, Upper East Side Allen impersonations. That’s part of what audiences bought into with Owen Wilson and Midnight in Paris, and it went on to become the highest-grossing film of Allen’s lengthy career. We’ll likely see more of To Rome as we get closer to release, including a trailer and marketing materials. Stay tuned.
