The To Write Love On Her Arms Trailer Is Full-Blown Weird

The latest trailer for To Write Love On Her Arms has premiered and it’s more than a little quirky and a tad underwhelming. Still the always-charming and rather lovely Kat Dennings manages to make up for any of its shortcomings. You can check it out and judge for yourself below.

First things first; is it just me or was it impossible to keep track of Kat Dennings’ hairstyles in that trailer? She seemed to go from bangs to goth to curls within the blink of an eye. The fact that I’ve started off by talking about Kat Dennings’ hair rather than any other element of To Write Love On Her Arms probably shows you just how underwhelmed I was with the trailer. But before I go in to greater detail about why I don’t have any inkling whatsoever to see the film, here is Sony Pictures’ official synopsis for it:

"Based on the true story that started a global movement, To Write Love on Her Arms presents a vision of hope, healing and redemption. Emmy® Award winner Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls) stars as Renee, a Florida girl who struggles with addiction and abuse. In a creative blend of artistic fantasy and music conflicted with hard reality, Renee discovers the value of genuine friendships and embarks on a daunting yet courageous journey towards recovery. The film also stars Chad Michael Murray, Rupert Friend and Corbin Bleu."

Here’s my issue with the trailer: the above description for the film actually sounds like something I would be interested in seeing. The clip should have given us a more detailed look at the two worlds that inhabit Renee’s mind. And even though we were ever so slightly privy to it at the beginning of the trailer, in the end this was eclipsed by a bevy of cliché and tepid melodrama.

To Write Love On Her Arms looks as though at the very best it will end up being a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. Its attempt to be gritty simply sees it mess up Kat Dennings’ hair, while even its romantic angle already looks as predictable and lame as a Christmas cracker joke. Plus don’t they know that sitting on the hood of a car and listening to planes take off has already been done to perfection by these two cinematic visionaries ….

But with Kat Dennings in its midst, To Write Love On Her Arms has a genuinely charming leading lady who should be able to bring her effortless glow and charisma to the film. Will she actually be able to paper over the film’s cracks though? We’ll find out when To Write Love On Her Arms is released in March, 2015.
