Things have been changing in Hollywood. TV shows and film franchises which seemed to reach their conclusion are being given new life, allowing us all to go back to the good old days and catch up with characters we followed for years. And the action/horror genre is no stranger to this, as both the Resident Evil and Underworld franchises have long awaited sequels coming out in 2017. The latter franchise just released the first trailer for Underworld: Blood Wars, complete with franchise star Kate Beckinsale. Check out all the vampire goodness below.
Ok, then. There's a lot happening in this trailer, but one thing is clear: the Underworld franchise is sticking to their guns. Literally.
Underworld: Blood Wars, the fifth movie of its kind, is looking like exactly what you'd expect from the franchise. We've got pale vampires with blue eyes, bullets flying, monsters, and Kate Beckinsale's Selene being a queen through it all. We are once again brought to the gloomy world where vampires and werewolves (aka Lycans) have major beef with each other and constantly fight to the death. This Blood War seems to be the the basic plot of the newest sequel, with Selene getting caught in the middle probably feeling conflicted whilst also being a badass killing machine. And all without messing up her makeup.
While the action looks fun enough, the way the trailer is presented seemed a bit strange. There was a random 5 seconds of action before the trailer actually began, and the final shot of Selene using throwing stars that spelled out the movie's logo felt pretty damn cheesy to me. But aside from that, the trailer is exactly what you'd expect. And it features a pretty exciting cast which audiences will be familiar with.
Joining Kate Beckinsale is Divergent actor Theo James as David, Selene's protege that was introduced in Underworld: Awakening. He's proven himself to be a captivating action star, and will presumably be a formidable character in the war to come. There are also two Game of Thrones cast members on the cast, which will delight the hordes of rabid fans that are currently without a Sunday night TV show to watch. Namely Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister) and Tobias Menzies (Edmure Tully). The role of Selene's lover Michael has been recast with Trent Garrett, who is replacing Scott Speedman from the first two films.
Are you excited for the Underworld's return to the silver screen? Or were we better off without it? Sound off in the comments below.
Underworld: Blood Wars will claw its way into theaters on January 6th, 2017.
