Today marks the exact 50th anniversary of Star Trek, a franchise that has dared its fans to boldly go where no one has gone before. Star Trek, of course has a long history on television (soon to continue with Star Trek: Discovery on CBS All Access), but since 1978, it's also spent a lot of time on the big screen. To help celebrate the grand accomplishment of reaching half a century, check out this new video that looks back at the most memorable moments of the Star Trek movie series.
The Star Trek movies have certainly had its ups and downs over the years, but as one can see from this highlight reel shared on Facebook, there have also been plenty of great scenes and stories spread across the Original Series, Next Generation and reboot installments. From William Shatner's James T. Kirk angrily screaming "Khan!" to Jean-Luc Picard's determination to beat the Borg to Chris Pine's Kirk facing down his timeline's version of Khan, these characters have had a lot of moments to shine in theaters. The cherry on top is that new theme music, cementing just how epic the Star Trek franchise is at its best.
This beloved world officially kicked off when Star Trek: The Original Series premiered its first episode, "The Man Trap," on September 8, 1966, and the show continued until 1969. However, if it wasn't for 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture bringing the crew of the Original Enterprise crew to theaters, the franchise would never have grown into the gigantic force it is today. The Motion Picture was met with mixed reception, but thanks to The Wrath of Khan impressing audiences three years later, the movie series found firm footing.
The Original Series cast concluded their time together in 1991's The Undiscovered Country, leaving Jean-Luc Picard and his Enterprise crew to continue where they left off in 1994's Generations, which was released six months after The Next Generation TV series aired its final episode. After 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis, the franchise took a break from the big screen until 2009's Star Trek, which rebooted the series with a new cast playing the original Enterprise characters in a different timeline. The most recent entry, Star Trek Beyond, was released in late July to positive reviews, and the tentatively-named Star Trek 4 has already been green-lit. So, yes, celebrating 50 years is an important milestone, but as the video says, the franchise still plans to go...beyond! Live long and prosper, indeed.
