As far as reboots of classic TV series go, Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer represented the cream of the crop when it hit theaters in 2014. Produced on a relatively small budget of $55 million, the Denzel Washington fronted thriller went on to achieve a strong following after garnering $192 million at the box office. With such success, a sequel was quickly put into development, but we haven't heard much about it lately -- until now. It turns out that The Equalizer 2 is still definitely on the way, but we will have to wait quite a bit longer to actually see it.
Fuqua told us recently that he had a script for the sequel that he liked. Now, a new report from Collider indicates that, while we will not get The Equalizer 2 quite as early as we'd hoped, it's still very much in development. During a recent Q&A panel following a screening of The Magnificent Seven, producer Todd Black revealed that the sequel to 2014's The Equalizer will begin production around Labor Day of next year. Of course, while this doesn't give us much information regarding when the film will actually hit theaters, it does indicate that the previously established release date (September 29, 2017) will undoubtedly be pushed back -- unless they've figured out how to start and complete a major motion picture in less than a month. At this point, a 2018 release date seems like the safest bet.
It also came to light that Denzel Washington wouldn't be the only integral factor from the original film to return. We now know for certain that Antoine Fuqua will indeed return to helm the sequel, thus bringing his own hyper violent (and hyper stylish) sensibilities to the proceedings. With all of the proper pieces in place, we have absolutely no problem waiting for the follow-up to the 2014 sleeper hit. Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua seem to have figured out one very important thing: any scene of Denzel kicking ass will almost always be worth the wait.

Although we will have to wait longer than expected to see the next installment in The Equalizer franchise, it sounds like everyone involved will make it worth our while. CinemaBlend will keep you up to date regarding any and all relevant details related to the upcoming production of The Equalizer 2 as more information becomes available. Until then, make sure to check out Washington and Fuqua's latest collaboration, The Magnificent Seven, which opens September 23.
