Someone Tell The Golden Globes It's Hidden Figures, Not Hidden Fences
Live television is always a risky venture. People are bound to make mistakes -- particularly on the red carpet -- and we have come to expect such blunders. However, that doesn't change that fact that it's nearly always ill-advised to mess up the title of a movie when talking to someone who actually worked on said film. That's precisely what Jenna Bush did when talking to Pharrell Williams on the red carpet at this year's Golden Globes, and the results were nothing if not beautiful. Check out Pharrell's reaction to the mistake below to see for yourself.
That's right, Jenna Bush accidentally referred to Hidden Figures as Hidden Fences (a clear mix-up with Denzel Washington's Fences), and Pharrell just stood there with an extremely befuddled look on his face. In that one beautiful moment, Pharrell is all of us -- standing there helplessly unsure as to whether or not he should correct her or be polite. Pharrell ultimately took the high road in this particular situation (despite throwing a ton of unmistakeable shade), but we have a sneaking suspicion that Ms. Bush has already learned about her mistake from others at the ceremony.
Of course, because the Internet is the Internet, people have already taken serious notice, and the hashtag #HiddenFences has started to go viral.
It's worth acknowledging that Jenna Bush wasn't the only person to say Hidden Fences at the Golden Globes this evening. Michael Keaton made a similar error when he took the stage to present later in the night. However, because Keaton is already known for his offbeat, devil-may-care persona (and also because the Internet immediately latched on to Jenna Bush's error), we think that it's entirely plausible that he was poking fun at the situation.
After all, do you honestly believe that Batman would make a mistake like that? I didn't think so.
At the end of the day, we're not surprised that somebody messed up the title of Hidden Figures. The Golden Globes is an incredibly fast-paced ceremony, and someone was bound to make a minor mistake at some point. The trick is to roll with the punches and carry on like a professional -- which Jenna Bush undoubtedly did. Besides, "figures" and "fences" are already pretty similar words, and we honestly doubt that we could do any better under pressure. That said, it's still fun to laugh about.
CinemaBlend will bring you up to date coverage of the Golden Globes as more information is made available to us. Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to try and write a script for a film called Hidden Fences. It's going to be a hit.
