During Star Wars: The Last Jedi, John Boyega's Finn will find himself on the casino planet Canto Bight with Kelly Marie Tran's Rose, a Resistance mechanic. It's there that the two of them will run into the mysterious "DJ," played by Benicio Del Toro. It's normal for Lucasfilm to keep as many details about its upcoming Star Wars projects under wraps, but DJ has especially been shrouded in secrecy. However, now we have a better idea of how he fits into Episode VIII's story, because according to John Boyega, Finn and Rose will need his "expert" computer skills while they're on Canto Bight. According to Boyega:
We just need a codebreaker and he's the best in the galaxy. Unfortunately, he's very dodgy and only in it for financial gain. He doesn't fight for any side.
We've previously heard how Canto Bight is one of the most luxurious planets in a galaxy far, far away, filled with wealth visitors and packed with law enforcement. It's there that DJ will put his slicing (the Star Wars equivalent of hacking) expertise to good use, and when Finn and Rose provide the right incentive, be it offering him credits on the spot or promising him a bigger payday later, he'll aid them on their mission, the details of which are still being kept under wraps to Star Wars fans. However, Boyega also told EW that just because DJ will be assisting them doesn't mean that he'll become their new best friend. From his perspective, the Resistance and The First Order are merely two opponents, and he wants to capitalize off this conflict. Boyega continued:
He has distinct opinions. The Resistance bombs the First Order one day, the First Order bombs the Resistance on another. It's an ongoing war that will never end. For him, he's trying to benefit off of that --- which doesn't make him the person you want to trust.
The Star Wars movies haven't really touched upon slicing, so having a prominent character like DJ around in The Last Jedi will be a great way to clue in the causal fans who don't read the books or watch the TV shows on how breaking through computer encryption works in this universe. DJ won't be the only computer expert who appears in the movie either, as The Leftovers' Justin Theroux was cast as a slicer who will have a "pivotal moment." However, regarding DJ, it remains to be seen if he'll part ways with Finn and Rose and continue with his neutral and profit-focused life, or if something will happen that leads him to permanently join forces with either The Resistance or The First Order. In any case, given how Kelly Marie Tran described Benicio Del Toro's DJ performance as making her feel like a tiger was in the room, Rose and Finn would be wise not to turn their backs on him.
We'll learn more about DJ when Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters on December 15.
