It's a good time to be a Star Wars fan. With Disney now in charge of the beloved franchise, there are a ton of Star Wars projects being developed at any given time. Between the main franchise and standalone films, we're expecting a new Star Wars film every year for the foreseeable future. The franchise also recently announced a new trilogy of films that are being developed by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. It's unclear exactly what these films could entail, but Johnson recently revealed why he's so excited to jump into the projects, saying:
Rian Johnson's comments at fan event in Mexico City (via Youtube) seem to highlight what makes this new trilogy such exciting news for the generations of Star Wars fans. Without characters or a concrete narrative to follow, Johnson is able to craft any type of Star Wars story he'd like. The galaxy far, far away is about to get way bigger.
News of this trilogy no doubt came from the hype and success of the standalone film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Expanding the franchise into capsulated one shot films was a major risk, but their first attempt was critically acclaimed and made a ton of money at the box office. Anticipation for Solo is also at a fever pitch, so it's clear that the fans are happy to consume as much Star Wars content as possible.
Rian Johnson's expanded role in the Star Wars franchise no doubt speaks volumes to the quality of The Last Jedi. The studio must really be happy with his work in the sequel, prompting them to give him control over three more films. After director Colin Trevorrow dropped out of Episode IX, rumors swirled that he would be taking on the final film in the trilogy. This role was eventually given to Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, giving Johnson room to begin developing the new trilogy.
And now is the time when fans begin speculating bout what Rian Johnson's trilogy will include. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had previously stated that the new characters like Rey and Finn will have a future in the franchise beyond Episode IX, so perhaps the new trilogy will take place after those events. And with the standalone films expanding the past timeline, this may be the perfect way to change the beloved franchise.
Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi will arrive in theaters in December 15th. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.
