We've been hearing about the live action Barbie movie since way back in 2015, and over the last couple of years, the movie has gone through quite a few changes. Initially Amy Schumer was attached to star, but then a little less than a year ago she dropped out of the live action Barbie movie, at the time citing scheduling conflicts as her reason for departure. Then, Anne Hathaway was signed on and it seemed as if the movie was back on track. We say seemed because now Sony is pushing the live action Barbie movie back from a 2018 release all the way to 2020.
Last we heard, the still untitled Barbie movie was on Sony's release schedule for August 8. However, the movie doesn't even have a date for production, yet, and Deadline reports that Sony still has a writing team working on a script for the movie. Last we checked, there are a slew of writers involved with the now-2020 project, too, with Lindsey Beer, Jenny Bicks, Kim Caramele, Diablo Cody, Bert V. Royal and Hilary Winston all being given writing credits. Alethea Jones is still signed on to direct. Presumably Anne Hathaway is still attached.
The new release date for the Barbie movie is May 8, 2020. So far, there aren't any other big projects scheduled for that weekend, but it's right around the time of the year that Marvel releases its spring movie. In addition, May of 2020 is quite far away, so we wouldn't be shocked if the live action Barbie movie went through even more changes before it finally gets off of the ground.
Anne Hathaway, especially, is a busy lady. In addition to being attached to the Barbie movie, she has Ocean's 8 coming up, as well as Nasty Women, Serenity, 02, The Lifeboat and Live Fast Die Hot locked in. Given the fact the Barbie movie won't be coming for more than two years, hopefully the Sony flick will be able to shoot around Anne Hathaway's schedule. Suffice to say, there are a lot of moving pieces with any movie, and the Barbie movie has undergone quite a few changes. It wouldn't be a shock to learn there might be more changes to come.
Despite the pushback, we've known for a while what the Barbie movie is expected to be about. It's going to be a fish-out-of-water story about a Barbie who doesn't fit into her world and ends up in the human world, where she will learn how to be herself and still fit in. In a lot of ways, it sounds like Enchanted, but with a toy component and plenty of merchandising tie-ins.
Once the Barbie movie gets off the ground, we'll keep you updated. In the meantime, you can take a look at what flicks are still hitting the schedule in 2018 with our full movies premiere guide.
