Why Avengers: Infinity War Didn’t Include Sharon Carter, According To The Writers

Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter

Even though Avengers: Infinity War boasted a impressively large cast, not every notable character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe made an appearance. One of the people who sat this epic tale out was Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter, S.H.I.E.L.D. operative-turned-CIA agent. Despite her and Steve Rogers having romantic sparks in Captain America: Civil War, Sharon wasn't by his side or seen at all during the crazy Infinity War events. For those wondering why Sharon wasn't included, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely attributed her absence to Infinity War simply being filled with too much material already for there to be time to see what Sharon was up to. Markus explained:

Sharon Carter was a victim of what we came to realize as we were writing it, which is that if you're writing scenes that set up people before the story has gotten to them, such as Steve and Sharon trying to make it work in an apartment, they're gonna go because the movie does not have time to catch up 'previously on the life of Steve Rogers.'

Stephen McFeely also added in his and Christopher Markus' conversation with Collider that as they were cracking Avengers: Infinity War's story, once it became a "smash and grab-type story," anything that wasn't related to Thanos' quest for the Infinity Stones wasn't thrown in, hence why we didn't peek in on Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter in a romantic relationship. For all we know, when he wasn't traveling across the world with Black Widow to covertly protect the innocent, Steve was becoming closer to Sharon (his former flame Peggy Carter's grand niece, let's not forget), but for now, we're left in the dark. Still, given how much was going on in Infinity War, I suspect most fans wouldn't have traded anything from the final cut for a little time with Sharon.

Warning: SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War are ahead!

When we last saw Sharon Carter in Captain America: Civil War, she had met up with Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson to deliver their equipment to them, and she and Steve shared a kiss. Steve didn't have much time to enjoy that smooch, though, as he and his allies soon had to contend with Tony Stark and the other members of Team Iron Man. As far as we know, Sharon was still working for the CIA when Avengers: Infinity War began, but because she also wasn't one of the supporting MCU characters whose fate was revealed post-Thanos Snap by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, we have yet to learn if she faded away with half of the all life in the universe or if she was part of the lucky half that survived. Unless she's included or referenced in Avengers 4, we may never know what happened to her.

Avengers: Infinity War is still playing in theaters, and Avengers 4 will wrap up both this story and Phase Three when it comes out on May 3, 2019. But before that, you can catch Ant-Man and the Wasp on July 6 and Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
