Does Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi Have Another Marvel Project Coming?

Thor and Hulk in Ragnarok

Despite producing tons of successful blockbusters over the past year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a surprisingly uneasy state. The studio hasn't revealed its plans for the shared universe after Avengers 4, with the only exception being Spider-Man: Far From Home, currently in the middle of filming. The following release was supposed to be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, although the firing of James Gunn last month has left that franchise in jeopardy. Some Marvel fans are hoping that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi takes on the project, as his sense of humor is the closest to Gunn's. Now it seems that Waititi might be taking on another project for Marvel, but what could it be?

This latest report comes to us from THR, where it was revealed that Marvel Studios has officially delayed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While not surprising, this put the future of the motley crew's adventures on indefinite hold, and it's unclear if the threequel will happen at all. Later in that story, it was revealed that Taika Waititi was reportedly meeting with Marvel, although neither party is willing to admit what the potential movie could be. So is it Guardians 3, Thor 4, or a new movie/TV show altogether?

Thor: Ragnarok was a game changer for the God of Thunder, as his first two movies aren't considered some of the MCU's best work. Waititi brought his signature sense of humor to Ragnarok, taking Thor into space, and pairing him with Hulk, Loki and newcomers like Valkyrie and Korg. The director actually voiced and did mo-cap for the latter character, giving him even more of an influence over the greater MCU. When Ragnarok hit theaters, fans immediately began campaigning for a fourth movie, hopefully with Waititi returning to the director's seat. But since Chris Hemsworth's contract is up with Avengers 4, it's unclear if Thor Odinson will be back after the final battle against Thanos.

Given Marvel's recent announcement regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it would also stand to reason that Taika Waititi could be taking a meeting about helming the upcoming threequel. If the studio wants to remain even remotely near their planned release date, the House of Mouse will have to get to work, and bring the Guardians together quickly. But that might be easier said than done.

The Guardians of the Galaxy cast are contracted for one more movie, but James Gunn's departure might change this. Following the cast's message of support for their director, actor Dave Bautista has continued staunchly defended Gunn. He even previously Tweeted he wouldn't return for the threequel if James Gunn's draft of the script wasn't used. We'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

The Guardians of the Galaxy (or what's left of them) will return to the MCU in Avengers 4. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
