Normally I’d be opposed to letting Seth Rogen do a movie with Reese Witherspoon. I mean, say what you want about Rogen’s work up till now, but at least he hasn’t settled for generic, Hollywood formula movies. Witherspoon on the other hand, except for the occasional biopic forays, tends to wallow in the formula genre far too often. But The Wrap says Rogen is in contention for a role in a Reese Witherspoon movie called This Means War, in which he’d literally destroy New York.

Word is that Rogen is competing with Star Trek’s Chris Pine for the role of FDR, a man named after the late president because his parents had high hopes for him. FDR is one of two roommate buddies who have their life disrupted when a woman (Witherspoon) moves into their spare room. Somehow things get so out of control that they destroy New York City, including landmarks like the Empire State Building. Why am I suddenly thinking of Hancock? As far as we know, super powers are not involved.

At one point the part was James Franco’s, but now he’s passed, which is sort of a shame. Imagine Reese Witherspoon randomly dropped into the same house with their permanently stoned characters from Pineapple Express. But it’s a Reese Witherspoon movie and let’s face it, she’s not normally up for something even as marginally edgy as two buddies smoking out.

My only real concern here is that this is a McG movie, and McG generally sucks. If this is another McG disaster, it might make more sense to cast Chris Pine, since horrible movies is exactly what he should be doing. He’s the new Captain Kirk, which makes it appropriate for him to follow William Shatner’s career path. That means doing lots of horrible, horrible garbage outside of Star Trek until later in life when you discover a new career as a gifted and comedically talented character actor. As a McG movie, This Means War could be a fit.
