Feel free to hold your applause while Gabourey Sidibe gets in shape. According to the 34-year-old Hollywood star, congratulations and gestures of public support are things she is not interested in receiving when it comes to losing weight. In a recent interview, the American Horror Story and Empire actress put her foot down and said,
Gabourey Sidibe sat down for an interview with Robin Roberts of ABC News on the podcast Everybody's Got Something. During the show, the Academy Award-nominated actress addressed how most of the people expressing congratulatory messages "are coming from a good place" because people are happy to see her getting healthy. However, Gabourey Sidibe went on to explore the ambivalent sexism underlying congratulatory messages about weight loss from a society that constantly tells women how to look.
Furthermore, Sidibe talked about how society does not seem to push men to keep the same rigid standards of perfection it encourages women to achieve. Therefore, when it comes to talking about women and fluctuating weight, all comments---whether positive or negative---seem "so misogynistic" in Sidibe's opinion. She cemented her stance by saying,
Gabourey Sidibe was there to promote her new book, This is Just My Face, Try Not to Stare. She talked about the process of slimming down with help from a weight loss surgery she underwent---not for aesthetic purposes, but for health reasons. Apparently, she was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes last year and worried about her well-being. In fact, Sidibe has explained she had episodes of intense panic about whether she might lose a toe because of the disease, so she decided it was time to take care of the problem. It seems like she is doing a great job so far, as evidence by Instagram photos and videos such as this one:
Now Gabourey Sidibe joins other celebrities, such as reality television personality Mama June, who have had success losing weight. Even Sidibe's Precious costar Mo'Nique went through a weight loss experience in the past. Back when Mo'Nique was talking about getting in shape, she mentioned how her husband encouraged her. Sidibe, on the other hand, has made it clear that the decision to lose weight was hers and hers alone.
Gabourey Sidibe makes some excellent points in the interview. Her weight loss journey is a personal one. Of course, people ought to continue wishing the best for her. However, they perhaps should do so silently.
