Is It Sexist To Criticize Sean Stewart And Adrienne Maloof's Relationship?

Earlier this month, Sean Stewart, the thirty-two year old son of Rod Stewart, started a relationship with former Real Housewife Of Beverly Hills star Adrienne Maloof-Nassif. Because she’s not even legally divorced from estranged husband Dr. Paul Nassif and because she’s nineteen years older than him and because they’re both pretty memorable personalities, the relationship has been generating quite a few headlines, but if Stewart is to be believed, anyone who has a problem with them being together is sexist.

The thirty-two-year-old former reality star made the claim to TMZ earlier this week after the outlet asked about the almost two decade age difference. Here’s a portion of the actual quote…

"If men can date younger women, why can't an older woman date a younger man? It's sexist. It's about the person she is inside. Age is just a number. If there's a connection and someone cares about a person, that's what matters really."

On the one hand, I understand where he’s coming from. People are way more likely to take notice of a large age gap when the woman is the older one, and I can see how that would be very frustrating to people in such relationships. On the other hand, however, I’m not sure it’s necessarily sexist to criticize this specific relationship. She’s barely been separated from her husband for six months, and it’s easy to see why people have rolled their eyes given the huge age gap.
