The last album Mariah Carey put out was a Christmas LP that dropped in 2010. Right now, between having young children and judging on this season of American Idol, you would think the woman has a pretty full plate, but she has actually added recording a brand new album to her schedule.

While the 42-year-old songstress is staying mum about the title of her upcoming endeavor, she did recently tell Billboard that the final product will feature a "lot more raw ballads than people might expect." Right, because fans have not come to expect ballads from the talented singer.

Still, there will be uptempo songs on the album as well, and to help Carey achieve that balance of ballad and grooving, she’s signed on several big name producers and has really been pulling her weight in the studio. During Vegas Week for Idol, the singer worked evenings and sometimes into the wee hours of the morning. She’s already working with Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox. Additionally, The-Dream, Hit-Boy, Big Jim Wright, and Rodney Jerkins are also on board.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Carey, but kudos to the singer for giving a pop album a shot again after several years and for competently wearing several different hats at once. If nothing else, she has one of the more incredible vocal ranges popular music has ever seen, and it’ll be interesting to see whether she’s able to push herself in any exciting new directions.
