Nurse Jackie Renewed For Season 6

Showtime's facing some big changes with its original programming, with veteran shows wrapping up and new shows joining the line-up. Dexter is set to debut its eighth and final season later this month, a few months ahead of its normal schedule. And that one comes paired with new drama Ray Donovan. But before that, Nurse Jackie will wrap up its fifth season. The good news is, it won't be its last, which is more than can be said about The Borgias.

Showtime announced yesterday that The Borgias' third season will be its last, which means fans should enjoy what's left of the show before it wraps up later this month. Nurse Jackie received better news today. The medical-comedy series starring Edie Falco has been renewed for Season 6. Given that it's currently averaging about 3.1 weekly viewers, it's not especially hard to understand why Showtime is keeping it around.

“NURSE JACKIE is an essential part of the SHOWTIME brand, and we are thrilled with the series' growth in its fifth season,” said Showtime President of Entertainment David Nevins. “Under the new leadership of Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, this show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever. I’m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie’s life.”

Fans will get to see the next chapter of Jackie's life next year, and Showtime says Season 6 will start shooting this fall in New York.

Executive produced by Clyde Phillips, Caryn Mandabach, Richie Jackson and Tom Straw, Nurse Jackie stars Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton, a brilliant emergency room nurse with a strong will and some personal issues. In addition to Falco, the cast includes Merritt Wever, Paul Schulze, Dominic Fumusa, Anna Deavere Smith and Peter Facinelli. Bobby Cannavale was among the guest stars this season, but it looks like he may be headed back to HBO, should things go well for Martin Scorsese's music industry drama.

The fifth season finale of Nurse Jackie will air Sunday, June 16 on Showtime.
