Yesterday was a bit of a strange one, as a large chunk of the Internet was focused on one particular news story - not the strange part - that followed the relatively brief escapades of a courageous/moronic dude ascending Trump Tower in New York City. While a movie fan might make comparisons to King Kong climbing Empire State Building, TV fans all over the place looked at the climber's shaggy head of hair and immediately thought it was Supernatural star Jared Padalecki. Guys, it wasn't Jared Padalecki.
As it often goes with flashes in the pan-ternet, some people pointed out that the climber (whose identity has been revealed) resembled Jared Padalecki, only without making it sound so much like a joke. And apparently that was enough proof for other less savvy and more gullible fans to run with. The actor himself felt the need to come clean that he was not, in fact, that guy. I didn't check the footage to make sure the climber didn't have a mobile device in his hand at the same time Padalecki went on social media, but I'll always trust a Winchester brother.
He did post again afterward, making use of the #BizarroJarPed hashtag that was making some waves on Twitter during the climb. So he couldn't possibly have known what was trending if he was maneuvering suction cups around, right? RIGHT?
Yeah, so the actual person that put this weird stunt on was identified as Great Falls, Virginia resident Stephen Rogata, who is just 19 years old. According to the New York Times, where it's also stated Rotata's birth name may be Michael Joseph Ryan, he was charged with reckless endangerment and trespassing. The reason for his climb was basically that he wanted to meet Donald Trump, and even had a selection of handwritten notes on his person to possibly hand to Trump if they met? I dunno. For his part, the GOP presidential candidate took to Twitter to thank the NYPD for handling the situation safely.
Padalecki still has some months to go in filming the rest of Supernatural's next season. As he stated - and as he and co-star Jensen Ackles have made clear through their prankery - he's currently up in Vancouver doing some things (which we presume is filming some kind of CW advertisement with the superhero shows). And we'll get a double dose of him near the end of the year when he returns to the Gilmore Girls universe for the drama's Netflix revival. So it's okay if he's not mounting skyscrapers in his spare time.
Supernatural Season 12 will arrive on The CW with the real Jared Padalecki in tow on Thursday, October 13, at 9:00 p.m. ET. To see when everything else will climb out of your TVs later this year, check out our fall premiere schedule.
