Fans have been waiting for more than a year for new episodes of Game of Thrones, and we're fortunately almost at the end of the hiatus between Seasons 6 and 7. The seventh seasons promises to be even bigger and more epic than all the seasons that came before as the main players of the series finally start to congregate as the Great War against the White Walkers kicks off. That said, there's still plenty of squabbling between the various factions of humans in store, and actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau may have just teased via social media that wildfire will be back in play. Check it out:
Wildfire has been a game-changing tool for the Lannisters over the years on Game of Thrones, starting with Tyrion back in Season 2 with the Battle of the Blackwater and continuing with Cersei's destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor in the Season 6 finale. Now, if Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's tease on Instagram is to be believed, we may be in for more wildfire destruction in Season 7. He has played Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones since the beginning, and it's perfectly possible that this was his way of giving fans a clue about what's to come.
Of course, the photo doesn't have buckets labeled "WILDFIRE" and leaking green fluid, but the barrels behind Nikolaj Coster-Waldau look an awful lot like the barrels of wildfire Cersei used to destroy the Great Sept with the grand majority of her enemies still inside. Coster-Waldau tagged the photo "Casterly Rock, Westeros," which Game of Thrones fans will recognize as the ancestral home of House Lannister. The first full trailer for Season 7 indicated that the action of Game of Thrones would make it to Westeros, as we could see dozens of Dany's Unsullied invading a castle decorated with red and gold lions that could only be Casterly Rock.
Given that Tyrion is Team Dany and doesn't seem to have much affection for the rest of his family, doesn't it stand to reason that he would help her army break their way into Casterly Rock? As he's also one of only two living people we know of who have used wildfire on a grand scale, maybe he was able to help Dany get her hands on some for use in taking Westeros. Wildfire would certainly add more credence to House Targaryen's motto of "Fire and blood." Could we see Casterly Rock go up in green flames in Season 7? If it does, we can bet that Jaime will not have the same look on his face as Nikolaj Coster-Waldau does in his photo.
All of this said, it's possible that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau simply has no pity for fans and is baselessly teasing us with a picture of wine barrels. We'll likely have to wait until Season 7 gets into gear to find out for ourselves. Take a look at our breakdown of what we know so far about Game of Thrones Season 7, which will finally debut on Sunday, July 16 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
