Spoilers ahead for the Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones.
Season 7 of Game of Thrones was absolutely wild, with the pacing for HBO's massively successful fantasy series went to a ten as the show prepared for its conclusion. And the season finale was no exception, as the largest ever ensemble of major characters was assembled at the Dragon Pit, and we saw the death of a long-loathed villain. But it's not all peaches and cream, especially regarding the explosive final scene. When the Night's King approached Eastwatch on a zombified Viserion, it spit ice and destroyed a large section of The Wall, with the fate of Tormund Giantsbane and Beric Dondarrion left a mystery.
It's this cliffhanger that has been seriously pissing off Game of Thrones fans. Because while the Night's King's attack on the wall was terrifying and exciting, it wasn't revealed whether or not Tormund managed to make it through. The collapse of the wall was very near to him, so it would have been a logical time for the Wildling to die. Instead, Game of Thrones left his fate ambiguous, leaving fans to wonder for at least a year until the final season premiers.
Tormund has actually seemed like a likely character to die all season. While the fandom loves his comic relief and infatuation with Brienne of Tarth, he doesn't really have much more room to grow as a character. He's already made amends with Jon and joined up with non-Wildlings from Westeros. He even had a close call during the penultimate episode "Beyond the Wall", before being saved by Beric Donadarrion. Getting killed by an ice dragon would be an epic way to go, but it's unclear if he managed to survive its onslaught.
Because while a good chunk of the Wall fell during zombie Viserion's attack, the entire thing didn't fall through. Tormund and Beric very well may have been on a part of the Wall that was left standing in the finale, therefore keeping them momentarily safe. But with the army of the dead now able to enter Westeros, the two warriors may have a difficult journey to Winterfell. So if he managed to survive the attack on Eastwatch, it's unclear if Tormund will actually survive Season 8's premiere episode.
Unfortunately for us, it'll be quite a while before we get any answers. The long hiatus until the final season will sure to be maddening to the fans, especially when Tormund is concerned. And while the Jon Snow death cliffhanger was bad enough, at least those stakes were a bit higher. But putting two supporting characters at the center of a cliffhanger seems like a letdown by comparison.
Should Game Of Thrones have revealed Tormund's fate?
