Star Trek: Discovery Fans Can Expect A Much Different Version Of Spock For Season 2

Star Trek: Discovery is set to welcome one of the most famous characters in Trek canon in Season 2 -- Spock. While there is still a lot of mystery surrounding his inclusion on the series, some answers are starting to pour in. And, it sounds like Trekkies need to prepare themselves for an encounter with a significantly different version of the beloved character when Spock makes his way to Star Trek: Discovery. Discussing the character's debut, the series' new showrunner, Alex Kurtzman, teased the following about Spock, saying:

This is not entirely the Spock who has been formed enough to be the Spock that we know from TOS. There's a lot of story about who Spock was before he becomes the Spock that is the yin-yang to Kirk. What I'm so excited about is that we have an opportunity to present a version of Spock that's both totally consistent with the Spock everyone knows but very, very different. And it's all gonna tie to how we sink up with canon.

This is one tidbit bound to bring its share of speculation. Of course, Spock not being the full-fledged version of his original canon self is to be expected, given this is a prequel version of the character. How the Spock character will be entirely consistent with canon and yet much different from that version, as Alex Kurtzman told TV Guide, will undoubtedly be something to behold. It is not as contradictory in nature as it may sound. Consider what was done with Clark Kent on Smallville, for instance.

Given how often prequels have dealt with this issue regarding character development, there is no reason to believe Star Trek: Discovery will not be able to handle it. While Spock's character growth is certainly worth teasing, so is a bit of the background surrounding the plot that brings him to Star Trek: Discovery Season 2. Spock's Season 2 debut will be a family affair, as it has to do with his sister Michael Burnham.

Alex Kurtzman has assured Trekkies that Season 2 will explain why Spock left out the vital detail of his sister's existence to Kirk and other crew members of the USS Enterprise. For Trekkies wondering how Spock and Burnham get along with each other, they will soon get their answer as the show will also delve into the siblings' relationship. Teasing the dynamic between the pair, executive producer Heather Kadin said:

I think that like any brother or sister, there's love. There's deep wells of stuff. That's what's so great about exploring that relationship, is there's a lot of tricky stuff that we get to dig into.

All of this sounds pretty sweet and compelling. In case you were wondering, you have not missed an official casting announcement for Star Trek: Discovery's Spock. The actor who will play the role has yet to be disclosed. Whoever the actor cast turns out to be, they are in for an exciting story that will break new ground for the character Trekkies were introduced to over 50 years ago. Star Trek: Discovery will have a lot going on in Season 2 with the introduction of Spock and Christopher Pike, along with many others, so stay tuned.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 will premiere in January 2019 on CBS All Access. To tide you over, Star Trek: Short Treks will premiere this fall on CBS All Access. For other new television content set to arrive this fall, check out CinemaBlend's guide to TV's fall premieres.
