An Early Death For The Beautiful Life

The CW may have had success with supernatural-themed TV shows but it seems as though their glamorous drama shows aren’t doing so well. In fact, the network has decided to yank The Beautiful Life from their lineup.

The Hollywood Reporter posted the news, stating that the CW has ceased production on the Ashton Kutcher produced drama series and pulled TBL from their line-up. As only two episodes had aired, the early cancellation is a mark of how little faith the network must have had in the series. Only about a million viewers tuned in for the second episode. The Reporter went on to say that Melrose Place has had some trouble “achieving liftoff,” while Vampire Diaries is doing just fine. As the CW has done well with supernatural series in the past, developing loyal fans to shows like Smallville and Supernatural, it’s not all that surprising that Vampire Diaries would be doing well on this network.

The CW isn’t exactly known for standing behind their shows when the numbers aren’t there but cutting a show off after just two episodes is a little surprising, even for them. Could the poor showing in TBL’s ratings indicate that viewers might be looking for a little bit more out of their TV shows other than watching hot people with problems? Will the CW consider that when looking at potential new series or are they going to see this as just bad luck for TBL and we’ll see another set of similar shows get picked up during next spring’s upfronts?
