It's not fair to doubt the supremacy of HBO in the premiere cable sphere after only one bad season - namely the stretch between Emmy nominated Game of Thrones, Girls and Veep leaving the airwaves to be replaced by the letdown in The Newsroom and the, well, whatever you call True Blood - but it's been a a rough summer for the perennial critics' darling.
Not to worry, very soon the man who helped put HBO on the serialized television map by playing a big part in The Sopranos, is back with the third season of his latest effort, a little known show called Boardwalk Empire. Oh, you have heard of the Golden Globe winning drama set during prohibition in a (blood) thirsty Atlantic City? Good, then you already know that Steve Buscemi's Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson "can't be half a gangster" and when you play the game of thrones you either win or you die... sorry, wrong show.
Same idea though, and the latest trailer for Season 3 offers a look a the latest player coming up against Nucky for Boardwalk supremacy. Meet Bobby Cannavale's Gyp Rosetti and he's got a gun. "Everybody's got guns!"
It's seems that Season 3 won't be want of action as more than a few shootouts seem to take place, especially with the blood starting to spill in New York, where things actually matter. Opening on New Year's in 1923, it's been a few years since Nucky took a wife and a life (I won't say, but if you don't know, why are you reading a third season post?) but the fallout from his actions are still being felt on top of trouble with this new guy. I can't wait.
Boardwalk Empire Season 3 premieres on Sunday, September 16 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO this fall. It stars Steve Buscemi, Kelly McDonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Vincent Piazza and Michael Stuhlbarg. It was created by Terence Winter.
