FX Collects Damages

I’ve been looking around for some happy TV news to report and it has not been an easy task. However, fans of the Glenn Close drama Damages are getting some good news. FX is picking up the series for two more seasons. The pickup means that we’ll see at least 26 more episodes of the legal thriller. FX’s decision to keep Damages on the schedule makes them the cable network with the most original dramas on the air. Other FX series’ include The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Dirt, The Riches and the recently renewed Rescue Me.

Although this is the first time the network has ordered multiple seasons of a series, FX’s show of faith in Damages is unsurprising, considering that they locked Glenn Close in for six seasons before the series even aired. While Damages’ first-run episodes didn’t net fantastic ratings (averaging about 2.5 million) critics loved the first season. Also playing a part in FX’s decision to renew it is the fact that the network co-produces Damages. As FX President and GM John Landgraf said to The Hollywood Reporter, “When we looked at the economics of it, it just worked out really well that we were able to make a commitment to two seasons.”

Damages was promo’d so relentlessly on FX this summer that by the time it actually got around to premiering, I was beyond sick of it. However, after a few months of constantly reading glowing reviews, I’m leaning toward giving it a chance when it’s released on DVD. Since there’s no telling when the second season will actually be able to go into production, it looks like I and anyone else who missed the first season will have plenty of time to catch up.
