There’s a lot of interest surrounding HBO’s Game of Thrones, and because of that interest, a lot of information tends to leak before the subscription cable network would probably like it to. This week, we’ve learned about a number of new characters who are expected to appear in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. This includes outlaws, lords, parents, and even one maester, who we hope will in some way have something to do with Samwell Tarly.
While earlier leaked casting descriptions have seemed to identify familiar characters—people like Euron Greyjoy and Sam’s family—these new descriptions seem to bring a ton of new characters into the fold, some important and some less important. Watchers on the Wall recently got a slew of character descriptions from a source close to the series, including some warrior characters that may or may not have something to do with Daenerys running into the Dothraki at the end of the season.
Qhogo and Akrat: They’re seeking mixed ethnicity or other non-white actors for the roles. The successful young warriors need to be tall, confident, with swagger and linguistic bravado. It’s noted that the actors will have to speak in a fictional language. I think it’s safe to say that these are Dothraki.
Then, there’s the maester, a man who is described as timid. The maesters book readers know include Maester Aemon (may he rest in peace on Game of Thrones), Grand Maester Pycelle, Maester Theomore and more. Since Sam is heading off to get maester training, it totally makes sense to include a character of this ilk, although it's possible Sam’s storyline may not come into play with this maester, at all. Here’s more info:
Submissive Maester: The show’s casting a maester in his twenties--a timid young maester. He’s decent but has trouble standing up to others. He appears in one episode in Season 6.
There’s also an outlaw band that will somehow come into play during Season 6. Characters within this group of rogues include a man named Flynn, which is an outlaw name if we’ve ever heard one, and another named Japeth. Two lords in the North will also be introduced, and one is notable for his height and overall physique. He's described by the outlet as a “massive bear of a man,” who also happens to be quick to anger and will appear in two episodes. The second lord is known for being "ruthless and calculated."
Game of Thrones left off with an explosive Season 5 finale that left the fates of some of our characters in limbo and left plenty of storylines open to continue in Season 6. While we catch up with people like Bran and figure out what the heck is going on with Daenerys, Game of Thrones still has plenty of new characters the show is set to introduce. It’ll still be quite a while before Season 6 premieres, but for now, here’s what we know about what’s coming next year.
