Spoilers ahead for the most recent episode of Game of Thrones.
This season of Game of Thrones has been giving the audience a ton of payoff. We’re hearing from characters who have been missing, plots are wrapping up nicely, and we even got to see the unthinkable: A Stark reunion. The Stark kids have been spread across Winterfell since Season 1, so Sansa and Jon’s reunion at Castle Black was extremely satisfying for long-time fans of the series. Of course, there was some other action happening at The Wall, in the form of a blooming romance.
When Sansa, Brienne, and Podrick were in Castle Black, it seemed that Brienne had a male admirer: the wildling Tormund Giantsbane. While this might have been fan theory at first, the director of the episode, Dan Sackheim, recently confirmed our suspicions.
I wasn't even sure that when I delivered the episode it was really clear. It was like a fun little bit, but I wasn't sure it was really clear that he had these amorous feelings for Brienne. I'm always amazed what fans pick up.
This statement, which comes to us from TV Guide, is a pretty clear answer. Tormund is feeling Brienne of Tarth, and time will only tell how that relationship will grow as Season 6 continues. Brienne certainly doesn’t seem to be interested, but she might be convinced later on. As long as it doesn’t interfere with her allegiance with Sansa.
A potential romantic plot for Brienne and Tormund could be very successful for Game of Thrones for a few reasons.
The audience, as well as the citizens of Westeros, have to start considering the Wildlings as valid members of society. While we certainly identified with them when Jon was playing double agent and getting squirrely with Ygritte in a cave, we also got an entire episode where the Wildlings tried to invade Castle Black. Tormund’s feelings for Brienne will help humanize the free men, and probably even change the opinion of the fiercely loyal Brienne.
Brienne getting a lover of her very own would also be a big change for the character. The Maid of Tarth has never been very lucky with boys. For the majority of her life the only male figure who treated her kindly was the late Renly Baratheon. And he didn’t even like girls. Brienne eventually formed a relationship with Jaime Lannister, but he’s way too involved in his incestuous drama to ever truly give her the time day. Brienne finally becoming the focus of male attention might break down the walls she tries to keep up. Plus they’d be a badass team of the battlefield.
Of course, only time will tell how Brienne and homeboy Tormund continue their connection. She might just let Oathkeeper do the talking.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO.
