ABC has hooked a big name to guest star on its top rated hit Modern Family this season. Greg Kinnear will be joining the cast of the popular sitcom in his first guest appearance on television since 2003, when he visited the set of another major comedy hit, Friends. It’s not like Modern Family needs the ratings boost but a major guest star is always a safe bet for pulling in viewers on the fence.

According to Kinnear has been tapped to play Tad, Phil Dunphy’s new business partner who is a successful, athletic real estate broker. Phil finds him impressive while Claire sees things a little differently, it seems. Kinnear should be a fantastic fit for the already strong cast on Modern Family, and his penchant for offbeat comedy should ensure he holds his own. Think Little Miss Sunshine, which is about as offbeat as it gets, except perhaps The Matador which is my personal favorite in Kinnear’s filmography.

Kinnear’s most recent appearance on television was in the award winning miniseries about America’s first family, The Kennedys - which is a far cry from sitcom country. Kinnear is a busy man these days in film roles, with four appearances in 2011 and another, The English Teacher already filming for a 2012 release.

If you didn’t already have a reason to watch Modern Family this season, Kinnear is about as good as it gets. Although from the ratings the series is seeing these days, it doesn’t seem that too many Americans are in need of an extra reason to tune in.

There’s no word yet on when Kinnear’s episode will air, but look for it after the holiday break.
