Joss Whedon Developing A Live Action Marvel TV Series

It seems very fair to credit Joss Whedon's directing efforts for a good portion of the success of The Avengers, both at the box office and among the fans and critics. So to say he'd be the right man for the job in taking on a small screen project, described as a "live action TV series involving Marvel characters," would probably be an understatement, especially when factoring in his past TV work.

Deadline broke the news this evening that Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that not only is Whedon set to write and direct Avengers 2, but that he's also developing the above mentioned live-action TV series. Developing seems to be a key word here, so we'll have to wait and see what becomes of this.

The site doesn't offer any specifics on which Marvel characters the series might include, but this news does fall in line with what the site reported late last month about ABC and Marvel possibly looking to take the mythology to the small screen with a show that had a "light" connection to The Avengers - set in the same universe as the film, but may not include any of the featured characters.

So while we don't know what Whedon might have in mind as far as a Marvel TV show goes, word that he's developing a TV project involving Marvel characters is certainly exciting news. As exciting as any news that involves Whedon possibly returning to television. Though his recent entertainment contributions have been for feature projects, his small screen work, which includes Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, is still beloved by fans. I doubt I'm alone in being eager to watch anything he puts on our televisions. That includes seeing Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog when it airs on The CW this fall.. Hopefully we'll hear good news about this Marvel project going forward.
