When it comes to Kevin Smith, people seem to love him or hate him. I'm not even talking about his films so much, Kevin Smith the person(ality) seems to grind a lot of people's gears, the "stunt" he pulled at Sundance and all the various jabs at film critics have made him somewhat unpopular in the blogging community...but he still has a few boatloads of fans that are behind him at every move. His next may be hosting a daytime talk show. And you thought you'd miss Oprah?

Red State, his latest and apparently second-to-last feature film, is scheduled to hit theaters this Halloween, before Smith embarks on his retirement dream project, a hockey comedy called Hit Somebody (not to mention a previously announced "Geek Memorabilia Show"). Somewhere in the middle of these plans Vulture has learned that he's "developing a daily, half-hour, syndicated talk show that would blend celebrity chat and comedy. Work has already begun on a pilot." Word first broke publicly two days past with Kevin tweeting for people to come sit in the studio audience.

The people at Vulture also got their hands on an email that outlines the tentatively titled Kevin Smith Project:

The idea is a Regis and Kelly talk show at the opposite end of the day for the opposite kind of audience -- the 12-34 demo. Kevin and his co-host will talk water-cooler topics at the top of the show, followed by a celebrity interview and a comedy segment from the field (a la The Daily Show). Each show will feature one celebrity interview.

First, this is a perfect fit for Smith if he's able to find the right network...meaning, a network that will allow him to get away with his endless stream of f-words, dick and farts jokes, and all other sorts of verbal vulgarity that makes him a funny and engaging public speaker, the one we've seen from his college-tour DVDs (An Evening with Kevin Smith, An Evening With Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder, and Kevin Smith: Sold Out -- A Threevening with Kevin Smith). The second interesting question is who will be this mysterious, aforementioned co-host? In my opinion, it's going to be one of three people: Jay Mewes, Scott Mosier, or Jen Schwalbach. We'll have to wait and see.
