When Legends of Tomorrow kicks off next year, Hawkgirl won’t be the only winged hero with a major role. It was announced earlier this month that Falk Hentschel has been cast to play Carter Hall, a.k.a. Hawkman in the 2016 superhero series. Unlike Hawkgirl (played by Ciara Renée), he was originally implied to be a recurring player, but it’s now been revealed that he will be a series regular in the DC TV spinoff.
In an interview with DCLegendsTV, executive producer Phil Klemmer confirmed that Hentschel will star as a regular member of Legends of Tomorrow’s cast. While this doesn't necessarily mean that Hawkman will be on the main team, this includes him in a lineup that consists of Hawkgirl, The Atom, White Canary, Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Martin Stein, Rip Hunter and Jay Jackson. For those of you wondering if this move will divert attention away from Hawkgirl, a.k.a. Kendra Saunders, not to worry. Klemmer assured fans that won’t be the case, comparing their relationship to a classic cinema couple. Klemmer said:
It doesn’t, because the way we’ve imagined them is that they’ve obviously been reincarnated through the ages together, but the fact that he remembers their previous lives and she doesn’t… it gives them very much like a Bogie & Bacall sort of [relationship].
As in the comics, Carter and Kendra will be the latest reincarnations of ancient Egyptian lovers that are always romantically intertwined each time they are reborn. The only difference this time around is that while Carter remembers their past lives over the last 5,000 years, Kendra won’t have any idea who he is when they first meet. Klemmer went on to say the two protagonists will be constantly fighting during the series since Kendra can’t wrap her head around them being eternal soulmates, and this may finally be the time that they decide to “shoot each other in the face,” i.e. deviate from destiny.
Beyond his relationship with Hawkgirl, Hawkman has previously been described as “a natural-born leader who is charismatic and wise beyond his years,” so he’ll presumably have more experience as a warrior than Kendra does. He, along with Legends of Tomorrow’s main antagonist Vandal Savage, will be introduced during the Arrow/The Flash crossover later this year, which Hawkgirl will also be showing up in. During the interview, Klemmer also said that every main character in Legends of Tomorrow will appear in every episode, so expect to see a lot of Hawkman in 2016. This will be the character’s third live-action appearance, having previously been played by Bill Nuckols in the 1970s Legends of the Superheroes TV specials and Michael Shanks in Smallville.
Legends of Tomorrow will premiere sometime midseason next year on The CW.
