Lifetime Picks Up New Series Prom Queens

Who doesn’t enjoy watching spoiled teenage girls fighting to prove they’re the most popular girl in school? Well, me for one, but for those of you who do, Lifetime’s got your show. They’ve picked up a new docu-series called Prom Queens which will follow teenage girls in their efforts to be crowned queen of the senior prom.

Lifetime has ordered eight episodes, each an hour long, says Deadline. Each episode will visit a different high school where viewers will get to enjoy all the over-the-top high school drama and teenage angst that comes with the struggle to earn the all-important title of Senior Prom Queen. The series is set to premiere on August 14th, and will follow another of Lifetime’s reality shows that looks at people who take things a little too seriously, Dance Moms. High school girls who are prom queen hopefuls already think they’re far more important than they actually are, so I can imagine that adding television cameras to the mix will do plenty to increase their sense of self-importance.

I won’t deny that there could be a funny side to the series, if you can see the hilarity in how seriously girls take the whole prom queen thing. Hopefully Lifetime will look to capture some of the absurdity of making a high school title so important. Certainly it’s the type of series that is likely to appeal to fans of some of Lifetime’s other similar shows and other reality series like Toddlers and Tiaras, which, much to my eternal confusion, remains on the air. Now, if they want me to tune in, they’re going to have to invite Stephen King’s Carrie.
