Smallville Reaction: Hostage

Ma Kent returns to Smallville with a new boyfriend, Perry White, and we see some touching moments as Ma Kent remembers Pa. The doorway scene in which Ma Kent see's Pa is really touching and Annette O'Toole shows how you can carry a scene with just superior acting, Erica Durance on the other hand uses cleavage to cover up her so-so acting. I think that Erica Durance is actually a good interpretation of Lois Lane, she just needs to take that extra step.

Perry has a huge story planned and Lois tells him about her equally large story involving aliens and super heroes. After Perry is intrigued by a picture of the Book of Rao, he reveals to Lois that he is investigating Checkmate. Lois and Perry decide to work together to uncover their stories, which seemed to be linked.

Lois and Ma Kent have a heartfelt speech in which Lois reveals that she needs to save the world in order to feel like she's useful. Ma tells her the story of how sometimes the simple life is more rewarding than the glamor of superheroes. Perry gives a similar touching speech to Clark that helps him to see his errors in love. It's good to have people with so many words of wisdom around.

The most awkward dinner ever follows as Lois breaks up with Clark in front of his mom. The Perry/Lois scenes were actually interesting and made me hope that Michael McKean would join the cast as a regular. Twice the Red Herring, I mean Queen, was revealed to be Tess. The trailer from last week ruined the surprise for everyone who didn't turn the channel after Smallville ended.

Chloe (I say with disdain) warns Clark that Lois is meeting with the Red Queen. Then, she crys about how she wants to be a normal person. On numerous occasions they have written Chloe to be this outcast that only operates behind a computer and now she wants to be a regular woman. Remember back in the day when she had the puppy love for Clark and we were teased that she may become Lois Lane; you know, back when she was entertaining. Anyway. Chloe got hacked by the Red Queen and then fixes it blah blah blah. We've seen this before.

Tess is unable to escape her badly lit "house" and Maxwell Lord busts in and bitch-slaps Tess across the room. Did anyone else see Tess butcher the "Zod, He burned you!" line. That was possibly the worst acting I've ever seen on this show. Tess faces off with Maxwell Lord again, he's come a long way since being the jerk on Ally McBeal. Lord fumbles his mind games and Tess realizes that she's locked in her own mind.

The Red Queen is finally revealed to be -- SHOCKER! -- Ma Kent! Ma Kent quickly cuts Tess deep by telling her to stop all her alien crap and leave Clark alone. How is Tess gonna stink up the show without other people's affairs to meddle in?

Clark puts the clues together and confronts Ma about her dealings as the Red Queen. Ma tells him that she has had the info on the location of the Book of Rao all along and she drops a bomb. The only way for Clark to get rid of the Kandorians is to teleport all the Kryptonians off Earth, including Clark.

In one of my articles a few weeks ago, I hinted that Ma Kent was the Queen, but I threw it out as a joke since it seemed ludicrous and people responded by actually agreeing with me. Funny how that worked out.
