TNT Orders More Rizzoli & Isles

In good but unsurprising news, TNT has announced that they’re giving their popular drama series Rizzoli & Isles another season. The series has been bringing in strong ratings in its second season, which is currently airing on TNT and will continue to air on Monday nights (10:00 p.m. ET/PT) through September 12th.

Set in Boston, Rizzoli & Isles stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander, as Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles, two characters created by best-selling crime novelist Tess Gerritsen. While Rizzoli is the tough Boston police detective, her friend and partner-in-crime-solving Maura Isles is the better dressed of the duo, and a smart, gifted medical examiner. From what I’ve seen of the series, the chemistry between Harmon and Alexander comes through really nicely with their characters. Rizzoli and Isles are different types of women, but they mesh really well together and despite their differences, their relationship makes sense on a personal level, as well as a professional level. I can see that being one of the biggest draws for the series for viewers.

The series premiered its second season this summer to 8.6 million viewers, which puts it in the same range as the popular crime drama The Closer, and the new alien-invasion survival story Falling Skies. Considering The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles hold the top two spots for basic cable series for the year-to-date, not to mention Falling Skies ranking as the top new series (this according to TNT’s announcement), I think TNT’s having a pretty good summer to say the least.

TNT’s announcement says that they’ve given Rizolli & Isles an order for 15 episodes for Season 3, which would likely air during summer 2012.
