TV Recap: Big Brother 11 - Week 7 Nominations

Sometimes it’s the random stuff in a Big Brother episode that holds my attention more than the game talk. Maybe it’s because I’m a little over this “Can we trust Natalie? Can we trust Russell?” business. The answer is no, Jordan and Jeff. You can’t trust either of them because neither of them would want to go with either of you to the final two. So instead of jumping right into the game-talk, let’s discuss the filler.

Jeff’s the eye-candy of the house and both Jordan and Kevin appreciate watching him water the plants. Michele also seems very taken by him, though she’s married so her flirting has to be limited to cute little conversations about her career as a neuroscientists and Jeff’s architectural achievements with regards to the art of Lego castle building.

On the Jeff/Jordan front, Jordan brought up the subject of going to Hawaii with Jeff. Jeff’s response to this was that if he takes her to Hawaii, he’ll want to do more than just kiss. Apparently, Jordan’s unwilling to go past first base with Jeff in the BB house. Can’t say I blame her. Not everyone’s an exhibitionist and considering she’s talked about her family quite a bit, it’s no surprise that she’s unwilling to make a tent with Jeff and have some “good times” as Lydia and Jessie did, knowing Mom might be home watching it on the feeds.

With only six houseguests left, the gang is making attempts to spend time together. Natalie boasted in the diary room that the rest of the house thinks she’s eighteen and stupid. Now, granted an eighteen year old might not have the same amount of life experience as a twenty-four year old but I don’t know that I’d say it’s an automatic assumption that the houseguests underestimate her because they think she’s younger than she is. That said, the point of her talk about the age thing was because apparently she’s won a poker tournament and she’s really good at the game.

Natalie, Jeff and Russell sat down to play a friendly game of Texas Hold’em, playing with Now-and-Later candies as chips. When Russell beat Jeff and Natalie after going all in, Natalie insisted on saying that he wouldn’t have done that if they were playing with real money. Ok, Natalie makes a valid point. Playing cards for candy isn’t the same as when there’s real money on the line but Russell’s point about Natalie being a sore loser was just as valid. Her comment to him came off as that of a petulant child who needs to make sure everyone knows she knows more than them even if she lost.

On to the game talk. We got to see how the Head of Household competition played out. The houseguests were attempting to drop cans down tall plastic tubes. The task proved to be more difficult for some than for others. While Jeff, Kevin and Russell were doing ok, Natalie and Michele fell behind. Jordan, whose narration of the event was really annoying to listen to (she’s adorable but the whole time she spoke throughout the competition, it sounded like she was reading off cards… she may have been), informed the houseguests of two new twists. The first was that the two last-place contestants would be the have-nots for the week. The second was that there were gold cans in play and if a houseguest wanted to slow another contestant down, they had to get one of the gold cans down a tube. If they called their shot, stating who it was they wanted to stall and successfully landed the gold can in the tube, the targeted contestant had to sit out for a minute.

Since Kevin was ahead, Russell used a gold can to force him to stop playing for a minute. Irritated at being stalled, Kevin then used a gold can to slow Russell down. Meanwhile, Jeff was landing can after can and quickly caught up to Kevin by this point. Kevin lost even more time trying to get a gold-can in and slow Jeff down but he missed. When the two were neck and neck, Jeff got his twenty-fourth can in and won Head of Household.

Jordan and Jeff had numerous conversations about whether or not they should believe what Kevin said about Russell wanting to target them if he got HoH or if they should stick to their final-four deal with Russell and Michele and target Natalie or Kevin this week. They confronted Russell and Michele about the conversation Kevin overheard and while Michele didn’t deny it, Russell attempted to fast-talk his way out of it. In the end, he admitted he wouldn’t want to go to the final two with Jeff because he didn’t think he could win against him but that he’d rather go with their final-four agreement and roll the dice after that. That’s a fair argument and frankly, Jeff and Jordan shouldn’t expect much more from him. But if Russell were to make it through this week and win HoH on Thursday, I think it’s probable that he’d try to get Jeff or Jordan out. Then again, the same could be said for everyone else in the house. The J-J showmance-alliance need to target strong competitors and while Natalie may be good at wheeling and dealing, she hasn’t proven to be all that great in competitions. Michele, Kevin and Russell on the other hand, are all strong competitors and with so few people left in the house, nominations and eliminations should be based on two things: who you don’t want to be sitting next to at the final two and who you think might be able to beat you in the next competition.

Natalie and Kevin talked to Jeff about arranging a final-four deal with Jeff. Natalie’s logic, though I don’t think she actually mentioned this to Jeff, was that while they haven’t been on the same alliance, they have been loyal to the people they agreed to protect, whereas Russell and Michele have floated. Jeff waffled back and forth about the talk he had with Natalie and Kevin with Jordan later, saying he could put Natalie and Kevin up and tell them they’re going to backdoor Russell if they get the chance or he could throw the agreement he has with Russell and Michele out the window by nominating them, making some flimsy excuse about not trusting them because he thinks there’s something going on between them. Personally, I think he made the better choice by nominating Natalie and Kevin. Breaking an alliance is usually worse than choosing not to make one. Plus, he still has a window of opportunity to set something up with Natalie and Kevin depending on who wins the Veto.

As for who goes this week, if it comes down to Natalie and Kevin, I’d want Natalie to go. That’s just personal preference though. She’s no where near as entertaining in the diary rooms as Kevin is and her know-it-all attitude is getting annoying. But if the houseguests were smart, they’d evict Kevin. He’s better at comps and he’s due for a win.
