I watched the first episode of The Vampire Diaries and while I was hoping this might be my guilty pleasure series of the season, I’m not sure how much of this mushy, teen vampire angst I can handle. I like a good vampire story. I watch True Blood and I'll admit to reading all of the Twilight books. I hoped The Vampire Diaries might be another enjoyable vampire thriller/romance story but having not read the books, I wasn't entirely sure what I was in for when I tuned into the premiere tonight. So far, I'm not sure I'm really feeling TVD, so I thought I’d put this question out there to the people who caught the premiere and especially to the people who’ve read the books: Do you think the show has promise?

If you missed the series premiere, The Vampire Diaries follows a high school girl who’s grieving the loss of her parents and the dreamy vampire who likes to stare at her until his eyes get veiny. He’s a good vampire who lives on the Cullen diet of squirrels and other red-blooded non-humans, while his vampire brother prefers a more traditional diet. The latter seems to discriminate a bit on his taste in humans as all of his victims were young and exceptionally good-looking. Then again, this is the CW, so it’s doubtful that he’ll have anyone who doesn’t look like they fell out of a modeling spread to snack on anytime soon.

I wanted to secretly love the premiere episode but Edward’s… I mean Stefan’s long, “romance novel” stares and Elena’s annoying (though justified) angst added to the typical woes of the surrounding cast of high school students just didn’t do it for me.

To those of you who read the books, is there a story here worth sticking around for or is this just going to be 90210 with fangs? The CW has it paired up with Supernatural and given the brother story arc in both series, that gives me hope that there might be something more to TVD than just high school drama with a vampire twist.

For fans of the books what did you think of the adaptation based on the series premiere? As for those of you who, like me, haven’t read the books, what did you think of the first episode of the series? Post a comment below with your thoughts on the premiere and whether or not you plan to stick around to see if what happens next!
