The new Game of Thrones footage just keeps coming. HBO’s fantasy drama recently released a few short clips catching us up on the likes of Jon Snow and Brienne of Tarth and this weekend, the network also released a poster catching up with Tyrion. You can check out the intricate new poster for Season 5, below.
The most striking thing about the poster, of course, is that Game of Thrones isn’t keeping Tyrion’s journey in the shadows. Following his big escape from King’s Landing after murdering his father and former lover during Season 4, Tyrion has made a big escape with the help of Varys and his brother Jaime. Anyone who saw last season should already know that Tyrion is on a boat headed somewhere far away, and the murky new Season 5 poster seems to be focusing on the journey, with Tyrion standing fore in the ship and staring into the distance.
Fortunately or unfortunately, it’s not land the character is seeing on the horizon. Instead it’s Dany’s dragon Drogon, who is still delightfully startling even when he’s hidden in fog instead of out in the open, as we’ve seen him flying in the past. Note: We’re going to get into some spoilers from the books, here, so we suggest you turn back if you want to stick with your TV knowledge on the subject.
Which finally brings us to why this poster is fairly surprising—it’s intimating to the audience that Tyrion is headed straight for Daenarys. Those who have read George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series likely should know that Tyrion has a lengthy journey across the Narrow Sea where he gets into wild shenanigans, including meeting another possible Targaryan heir, getting captured by Jorah Mormont and later appearing in the fighting pits in Meereen as a performer. This all occurs in the fifth book in the series, A Dance with Dragons, and from the looks of the new trailer, the poster makes it appear as if we will be cutting to the action much sooner rather than later.
This isn’t the first time that Game of Thrones has hinted that Tyrion and Danaerys may be in the same location. The Game of Thrones Season 5 trailer closes, in fact, with a telling scene between Varys and Tyrion. The eunich is musing about how the seven kingdoms need a ruler who can be “loved by millions” but who must come from the right background. Tyrion, being the smartass he is, says, “Good luck finding him.” And Varys responds with a quippy comment about having never said “him.” At the time, it seemed like a nice tease, but the above poster makes it clear that Daenarys’ current home is Tyrion’s ultimate destination.
We’ve seen photos of the dragon pits and conversations about both Dany and Tyrion’s journey, all of which should hopefully make Meereen an important part of Season 5. Now, we just need to hold our horses for a few more weeks. HBO’s Game of Thrones will hit the schedule on April 12 at 9 p.m. ET, followed by new episodes of Silicon Valley and Veep.
