It should come as no surprise to anyone that Transformers is blowing up the sales charts on DVD. The film hit home video formats earlier this week, and has already gone on to smash all kinds of sales records. It’s not enough just to see Optimus Prime, everyone seems to want have him in their home too.
Transformers has already had the top-selling first week of any DVD sold this year, and will probably keep selling in record amounts. They moved 8.3 million units in the DVDs first week, a rather huge 4.5 million just on Tuesday giving it the record for best-selling day one for the year so far. It’s the top-selling October DVD release in the history of the home entertainment industry. Even more importantly perhaps is that HD DVD has gotten a boost in the format wars. Transformers is available exclusively on HD DVD, and will not be available for all you PS3 schmucks and your Blu Ray players. That hasn’t stopped Transformers from selling like wildfire in high-def. It’s officially the best-selling day one high definition title on either format since their inceptions, selling 100,000 HD DVD in its first day on the market. They’ve sold 190,000 HD DVD copies in total so far. It probably didn’t hurt that the movie’s 2-disc release is supposed to be loaded up with extras and really really good. Put a little effort into these things and buyers respond. Giant freakin transforming robots is big business, and it’s only going to get bigger. Forget superhero movies, metal monsters are the future. |
