The streaming Netflix movie service for Xbox Live has hit a bit of a snag. It seems that a few hundred titles from Columbia Pictures are now unavailable for viewing. Guess who owns Columbia Pictures? Sony Pictures Entertainment.
"Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers’ computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they’ll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly," said Netflix VP of corporate communications Steve Swasey to MTV Multiplayer on Tuesday night.
The timing is the most intriguing part. Tomorrow is the debut of the New Xbox Experience to the public so naturally a lot of people are going to assume Sony is trying to muck up the launch. Completely possible that this is all just a coincidence, though. As Joystiq notes, there are other Sony Picture Entertainment films still available for streaming so the brouhaha with Columbia Pictures could just be a case of bad timing. Really, really bad timing.
