Why Modern Warfare 2 Isn't A Call Of Duty Game

Infinity Ward raised a lot of eyebrows by not including the term Call of Duty in the title of their sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Now community manager Robert Bowling has explained the decision.

Bowling told MTV that the game is called simply Modern Warfare 2 because they want to emphasize the fact that it's a direct sequel to COD4: MW. "This has never happened in Call of Duty before. They’re typically their own campaigns and totally unrelated to the previous one. This one, is indeed a direct sequel and we just want to make that clear."

The flipside to the title is that folks might not know it's still essentially a Call of Duty game. Considering how keen Activision is on cultivating its top brands - look at how many Guitar Hero games they're spitting out - it just seems odd that they'd remove the series name from MW2's title. I guess Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 would've been too awkward a name, though.
